John J. Scarano, CHMM – President & Founder

 

PhotoAs President and founder of Scarano Group Inc. (SGI), John brings more than 23 years of professional environmental safety and health leadership to the company. He founded SGI in 2000 and has grown the firm into a nationally recognized industry leader. John oversees all firm operations, including financial management, marketing and business development, as well as its quality control and employee development and training programs. Prior to establishing SGI, John was a project manager for a major environmental company managing various environmental health and safety projects throughout the Southeast. John has held the Hazardous Materials Management certification (CHMM) since 1995 and is actively involved at the local and national level.

 

John coordinates and conducts the annual Certified Hazardous Materials Management review course in Atlanta, GA. He is a frequent guest speaker at courses such as Georgia Institute of Technology’s Managing Environmental Compliance. In 2005, he completed the US Department of Homeland Security WMD Technical Emergency Response Course (COBRA).

 

 

Joseph Scarano, M.D. – Corporate Board Secretary

 

Joseph Scarano has been practicing pediatric medicine for over 20 years. Dr. Scarano is a partner with the practice of Giangreco, Scarano & Taylor Pediatrics located in Bradenton, FL. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Joseph’s University, Philadelphia, PA and a Doctor of Medicine degree from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey; he continued his post-doctoral medical training in Pediatric Residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.

 

Dr. Scarano is board certified in pediatrics and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. In addition to private practice, he is an assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at Florida State University College of Medicine. Dr. Scarano volunteered for two years as a pediatrician at Manatee County Rural Health Services, Samoset Clinic in Bradenton, Fl. Dr. Scarano’s areas of special interest include assessment of febrile infants, child abuse recognition, training practitioners in adolescent preventative services and patient education.

 

 

Martin Arthur Shelton, J.D. – Corporate Board Treasurer

 

Martin A. Shelton is a Partner and the head of the Environmental Practice Group at the Atlanta law firm of Schulten, Ward & Turner, LLP. Martin began his legal career in 1995 after gradating from Georgia State University’s College of Law. After graduating, he began work for an Atlanta-based international law firm, and eventually left to pursue an environmental practice with a boutique environmental firm. Over the course of eleven years, he served as the primary and later senior attorney in matters of environmental litigation and compliance including several precedence-setting appellate decisions. In early 2007, he was chosen to lead the new environmental practice group at Schulten Ward & Turner, LLP, Atlanta, Georgia. Since joining the firm, he has focused his practice on environmental litigation, both traditional cost recovery and plaintiff matters, land use litigation, environmental compliance and Brownfields development assistance.

 

Martin has always strived to serve each of his individual clients with the highest level of professionalism while also ensuring that the goal of analyzing and solving their environmental issues has been met. Whether as a plaintiff or defendant, he has successfully counseled clients on solutions which seek prudent environmental solutions as well as fiscal responsibility. His practice has included trial and appellate work in the areas of water quality and storm water management, solid and hazardous waste contamination, air and noise pollution, and the preservation of natural habitats; environmental compliance under water permits and on hazardous waste sites; and land use disputes in both the zoning and property law contexts.

 

Martin A. Shelton is currently licensed to practice law in Georgia, the District of Columbia and Washington State. He is a member of American Bar Association, Georgia State Bar Environmental Law Section for which he served on the Governing Board for the last four years including serving as the Chair of the Section in 2008, DC Environmental and Natural Resource Section and the Washington State Bar Environmental and Land Use Law Section.
